Grade 23 ELI Titanium Plate (Grade 23, UNS R56401, also known as TC4ELI) is essentially an upgraded version of Grade 5 titanium, with the main difference being its extra-low interstitial (ELI) content. That translates to better fracture toughness, excellent performance at low temperatures, and top-tier biocompatibility. By keeping tight limits on elements like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and iron, this alloy has become the go-to material for medical implants and critical aerospace components.

  • High purity, better performance – Because interstitial elements are strictly controlled, Grade 23 delivers noticeably higher fracture toughness, fatigue life, and low-temperature capability than Grade 5.

Forms and Processing Tips

 

  • What you can get – Available in annealed condition (M) for maximum plasticity and toughness, solution treated and aged (STA) for a good strength-toughness balance, or hot-rolled/cold-rolled depending on your specific needs.
  • Working with it – Cold formability is better than Grade 5. If you're doing significant deformation, a vacuum anneal in the 700–750°C range is a good idea. For machining, carbide tools work well-just watch the temperature to avoid sticking issues.
  • Welding – Use high-purity argon shielding (99.99% or better). A post-weld vacuum anneal helps bring mechanical properties back to where they should be, and weld strength typically hits over 90% of the base metal.
